RAMS in Gaming: Everything You Need to Know

We all love games and want to experience the latest released titles. Well, our gaming laptops to some extent, need to have a few ingredients to provide us with a stellar gaming environment. The ingredients are:

  • Recommended RAM
  • Dedicated Graphics Card
  • Strong CPU
  • Enough storage space

Not having the right combination of these will result in a horrible final product. Believe me, it is frustrating to not enjoy games the right way. Today, we will start off with one item on the above-mentioned list. The RAM. Having an appropriate RAM on your PC solves half your problems and will take your love for gaming to a new height. Let's find out why.

Why RAM is important for Gaming?

The biggest responsibility of  RAM in your gaming PC is taking care of the frame syncing and rate. Frame rate (fps) is simply the number of game visuals you see on the screen every second. It can be 30 fps, 60 fps, or even unlimited but that's subjective to the gaming device we have. But how does RAM fit in with the rest of the PC?

The answer is simple, your entire gaming file is located in your storage space and for running it you need to bring it to your Central Processing Unit (CPU). There is a big problem. Bringing game data from your storage to the CPU over and over again is not efficient at all. Providing a temporary storage space that can quickly transfer data to the CPU for processing is the way things should be done. The RAM provides that space.

What Kind of Gamer are You?

Finding the perfect RAM for your gaming device can be a tough task but the question largely depends on a few things:

  • Are you a hard-core gamer or not?
  • Do you play the latest gaming titles?
  • Is gaming a source of earning for you?

There are many types of gamers. Some are professional gamers who take part in competitions or run a social media channel where they make content related to video games. In that case, they should focus on getting the best available options out there. On the contrary, if you play every once in a blue moon, then getting a lower-end PC with just enough RAM will do the job for you.

Lastly, are you a professional video game artist or developer? In this scenario, a super game dedicated PC will be the best companion for you, considering the intensive work it requires to build or test a video game for most platforms.

What RAM Size is ideal?

Considering the last decade, gaming has been revolutionized completely. Realistic graphics, look, and feel are the demand of most gamers these days. Starting from 2011 until now, the following RAM sizes were the most common but each had its own time fraction.

4 GB RAM - Not enough for Gaming Laptops

The size was the safe choice in the initial golden age of gaming evolution. In this phase, most gamers opted for a Core 2 Duo processor with a 4 GB ram and a 500 GB hard drive. Famous gaming titles from this era include titles like:

  • Battlefield 3 and 4
  • Call of Duty Black Ops
  • Medal of Honour
  • Assassins Creed Black Flag
  • Fifa 12 and 13

Unfortunately, this RAM size is becoming insufficient for a number of years now. Currently, no latest major titles run on 4 GB RAM. If you still want to relive the memories of the past titles and have a spare system in your back yard or basement, this might still work from a nostalgia standpoint but it's not a stellar gaming experience meeting the modern standards.

8 to 32 GB - Recommended

The starting point for the most recently released games is the 8 GB mark. This can work fantastically well with a Core i3 or i5 processor and as long as the system doesn't bottleneck, the gaming it will provide will be pretty decent. Some of the games you can try on these specs include:

  • Assassins Creed Syndicate, Unity
  • Battlefield 1
  • Battlefield 5
  • Call of Duty Black Ops 3
  • Fifa 19, 20, 21
  • Mafia 3
  • GTA 5

For the part-time gamers out there who don't want to break their banks for a gaming PC, 8 GB ram will suffice very nicely. Now, we move into the Professional zone where we need to consider the gamers who work in the industry or create content with a nice enough budget. 16 GB to 32 GB RAM will be absolutely necessary for them.

Game streaming, development, and review require a capable machine that will deliver a realistic gaming session without lagging. The following gaming title should be the benchmark for a super gaming machine:

  • Hitman 3
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Dying Light Series
  • Sekiro
  • Elden Ring
  • Forza Horizon 5
  • Red Dead Redemption 2
  • Witcher 3

Such machines leave no stone unturned for people whose livelihood depends on video games. After all, it is a compulsory factor for them.
